The East Coast Triathlon Festival is one of 5 events in the USAT Junior Elite and Youth Elite Series; the premiere triathlon race series for athletes 13 to 19 year olds in the United States. Consisting of four national-caliber competitions each spring and summer, the series prepares athletes for draft-legal competition and qualification to US teams competing at international championships. Each event has two competition categories – a Junior Elite Cup (16-19yrs) and a Youth Elite Cup (13-15yrs) – in which athletes are grouped by age and gender. Courses are designed to mimic Olympic style racing, with multiple laps and high speed transitions, making races exciting to watch for families, friends, and teammates.  The series finishes with the USAT Youth Elite and Junior Elite National Championships in West Chester, Ohio, on August 1-2,. 2015, for which athletes must qualify at one of the three Elite Cups, including Richmond.  The USAT Junior Elite Series is officiated using international-standard draft-legal rules published by the International Triathlon Union by officiating teams selected by USA Triathlon.
