Located at beautiful Smith Mountain Lake State Park Friday’s races are all about the kids with 2 Collegiate Draft Legal races and the Virginia High School Championships. With a crisp, clean 750 meter swim, rolling multi-loop 20k bike and rolling 5k run all in the state park this is an outstanding event. (Please note Friday’s races do not count towards VTS-MTS Series points)
Friday Race Schedule
9:00 AM – Collegiate Men Draft Legal
10:30 AM – Collegiate Women Draft Legal
12:00 Noon – Virginia High School Sprint Championship (non-draft legal)
Swim Course: The swim takes place in the cool, clear waters of Smith Mountain Lake. Athletes will have an in water start on the beach to get ready for their crisp 750 meter swim. The swim is tucked away in a cove and is well protected from most winds. The water temperature is usually in the mid 60’s and is very well supported with boats, lifeguards and EMS. After ending on a sandy beach athletes will run a short distance on pavement and grass to get to the parking lot used for transition. Any athlete that has not finished the swim when the first cyclist has started their 2nd lap on the bike will not be allowed to start the bike portion.
Draft Legal Bike Course: This bike course is a multi-loop format and is all inside the park. Athletes will exit the transition area, ride 2.5k out, turnaround and ride 2.5k back to race through the transition area and start their next lap. Athletes in the draft legal races are expected to have excellent bike handling skills and be able to safely ride in packs as this is a draft legal event. Complete bike course maps can be found at the left hand side of this page. Collegiate Men and Collegiate Women will do 4 loops of the bike course. The lap rule will be enforced.
High School Championship Bike Course: This bike course is a rolling 10k loop that is done twice. This is not a draft legal race, hence the extra distance to spread athletes out. This course is contained entirely within the state park. Course maps can be found on the left hand side of this page.
Run Course: The run is a rolling 5k out and back course contained entirely within the state park with water stations located at the start, mile 1 and mile 2.
There are 75 spots for each of the Collegiate Draft Legal races and 150 spots for the HS Championship. Awards will go 3 deep in each event.

Event Site Rules
Traffic: Please note that in order to have a safe race we will only be allowing cars in/out of the park during the 30 minutes between races. The only road in/out of the park is the bike/run course. Traffic will be allowed to move during the following times:
6:00AM – 9:00AM
10:00AM – 10:30AM
11:30AM – 12:00 Noon
If you have friends or family coming in to watch, please make them aware of the narrow time window for getting down to the race site.
Transition Area Rules: Please note that bicycles will not be released from the transition area until the last runner exits transition. The parking lot exits directly on to the bike and run courses and having 100+ cars disgorge onto the bike/run course creates a very unsafe situation for the remaining athletes. Thank you for your understanding and patience in this matter.
Parking: There plenty of parking at the race site, please make your way to the beach lot for athlete check in and to race. Again, please note that cars are “locked in” until the last runner starts the run. Please plan accordingly.
Race Capacity: Draft Legal – 75 athletes/race. HS Championship – 150 athletes
Collegiate – Top 3 Men & Women
High School – Top 3 Men & Women
