Colonial Beach

Olympic & Sprint Triathlons

Relay & Aquabike

July 17-18, 2021

Colonial Beach, VA

One of the longest running triathlons on the East Coast, the The Pohanka Honda Colonial Beach Triathlon is set in the bucolic riverside town of Colonial Beach, VA.  Easy to get to from Richmond, VA and Washington, DC. In 2021 the Sprint distance race will be on Saturday and the Olympic distance will be on Sunday. The swim starts out with an L shaped course in the Potomac River. The sprint bike course is mostly flat with 3 turns over 14 miles while the Olympic bike course is more challenging with a few rollers to ride over. Both bike courses have stunning seaside views and take athletes through beautiful sections of farmland and forest on well paved roads. Upon return to the beach, athletes will embark on a flat, scenic out and back run course. This is a fun town to race in with many activities and restaurants to explore, click HERE to learn more. Check out this race video HERE and then register below!

Aquabike: 1.5K Swim (Bay); 40K Bike (Flat)
Course Details & Course Maps

Swim Course: The 1.5K swim begins with an in water start in the brackish Potomac River.  Athletes will swim a rectangular shaped course that parallels the shore most of the way. The course will have yellow triangle turn buoys and orange round sighting buoys will be located approximately every 75 meters. This race is historically not wetsuit legal as the temperatures hover around 80-82F. A temperature reading will be taken and posted the Thursday prior to the event with an official reading taken by our USAT Officials on race morning. The swim is spectator friendly as the course never gets more than 150 meters off shore and parallels the beach.  The water temperature in 2015-83, 2016-82, 2017-82, 2018-82.

Bike Course: The Olympic bike course is a energizing mixture of rolling hills and flats. The first and last 5 miles of the course are pretty close to pancake flat, but once you turn right on Rt. 218 the rolling begins and stays with you to the turnaround point and back. The course has terrific views of the Potomac River, marshland and forests on well paved roads, it really is a joy to ride.

Run Course: The Olympic run course is a pancake flat, out and back 10k. The run exits transition to the left and does a short out and back get the full 10k distance. The run then proceeds along the boardwalk to Irvine Ave where you’ll have unobstructed views of the water for the first and last 2 miles of the course. Miles 2-4 are heavily shaded back roads with views of the back bay, marinas and sailboats. Aid stations will be located every mile and will be serving Gatorade and ice water.
